Biography
Paul Smallwood Tipton (1939-2008) entered the Society of Jesus in 1958. He attended the University of Virginia and received his BA degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama in 1964, later joining the staff of Congressman Richard White (D-Texas) in 1968. He continued graduate theological studies at Woodstock College, Union Theological, and Catholic University. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest as a member of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus in 1971. In 1972, Tipton was named the 35th president of Spring Hill College where he served until 1989. He assumed the presidency of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C. and served from 1989-1995. During his tenure, he helped expose the assassination of six Catholic priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter by the Salvadoran army. In 1996, Tipton was named president of Jacksonville University and left the Jesuits to become a diocesan priest.

Paul S. Tipton, SJ served as AJCU president from 1989-1995. Some of his materials can also be found in the presidential files of Charles L. Currie, SJ, as national office files were often inherited by subsequent officers.
