Biographical note
Catherine “Kate” Smith was born on March 3, 1821. She was the daughter of Maria and John Simm Smith. On August 8, 1843 she married Manley Hopkins. Together the couple had nine children. She was a painter, poet, and a novelist, and was also a devout Anglican. She died in Surrey on September 30, 1920, aged 99.
