Biographical note

Grace, Princess of Monaco, was born Grace Patricia Kelly on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She featured in 11 films and starred in over 60 television productions, and won an Oscar for best actress in 1954 and three Golden Globes. On April 18, 1956, she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Together the couple had three children: Princess Caroline (January 23, 1957), heir Prince Albert (March 14, 1958), and Princess Stéphanie (February 1, 1965). During her marriage, she discontinued her acting career. Instead, she performed her daily duties as princess and became involved in philanthropic work. On September 13, 1982, Princess Grace suffered a mild cerebral hemorrhage while driving, resulting in a car crash. She died the following night due to complications from the crash, at the age of 52.

Abstract

The papers of diplomat Peter K. Murphy (1936-) consist mainly of correspondence with American, French, German, Italian, and Monégasque politicians, diplomats, and Catholic clergy. The collection also includes subject files relating to United States diplomatic relations with the Holy See and with Monaco. It consists of correspondence, clippings, photographs, and printed materials.

Restrictions on Access

The collection is open for research. Correspondence with Princes Rainier III and Albert II of Monaco received in the first accrual (2013) is closed until 2038. Correspondence with Prince Albert II of Monaco received in the second accrual (2021) is closed until 2035. In addition, one folder is closed for privacy reasons until 2065.
