Biographical note

American lawyer Gordon Fairchild (1882-1932) was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. He went with his sister Sally to China, Japan, and the Philippines, where he was apointed to the bureau of justice of the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands. While in China the Fairchilds collected the remains of their brother Nelson, who had been vice consul general to Manchuria when he died in 1906.

Scope and Contents Written in a commercially-produced blank book of 184 pages, of which the last 54 are blank, this diary recounts the travels of Sally Fairchild in China, Japan, and the Philippines from 1911 to 1914. Fairchild describes excursions to temples and mountains, and life among the families of staff of the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands.
