Dates

  • Creation: 1911 January 18-1914 August 12

Scope and Contents

Written in a commercially-produced blank book of 184 pages, of which the last 54 are blank, this diary recounts the travels of Sally Fairchild in China, Japan, and the Philippines from 1911 to 1914. Fairchild describes excursions to temples and mountains, and life among the families of staff of the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands. The final entry of 1914 August 12 describes Fairchild's shock at the outbreak of war. Most entries are illustrated by tipped-in gelatin silver print photographs, 48 in all, presumably taken by Fairchild. Three additional photographs with handwritten captions on the versos are inserted loose following the final entry.
