Dates
- Existence: 1835 June 2 - 1914 August 20
Biographical note
Joseph Sarto was born in 1835 in Riese, near Venice, then part of the Austrian Empire. From 1850, he studied at the minor seminary at Treviso, and went on to Padua. He served nine years as curate to the parish priest of Tombolo. Promotion followed: in 1867 he was parish priest of Salzano, in 1884 Bishop of Mantua, and in 1893 Patriarch of Venice and Cardinal. He was elected Pope at the Conclave of 1903, taking the name Pius X. His papacy was distinguished by his decrees on early and frequent Communion, on liturgical reform, and on the teaching of the Catechism. Other notable activities were his condemnation of Modernism, his reorganization of the Roman Curia and initiation of the codification of Canon Law. He died on August 20, 1914, just after the outbreak of World War I, and was canonized in 1954.
