Biographical note
William C. McInnes, SJ was born in Boston in 1923, served in the United States Army Air Forces as a meteorologist during World War II, and earned degrees in Business Administration (BS Boston College 1944 and PhD New York University 1954) and Philosophy (MA Boston College 1951). He entered the Society of Jesus at Weston College (1946) and was ordained a Jesuit priest (1957). McInnes became a professor of Business Ethics at Boston College in 1959 and was appointed Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration two years later. McInnes served as President of Fairfield University (1964-1973) and President of the University of San Francisco (1973-1977). His next presidency was for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), a consortium of Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, a role he held from 1977 to 1989. Prior to retirement, he worked as a campus minister at the University of Connecticut and the parochial vicar of St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Parish in Storrs, Connecticut. After retiring, he returned to the Jesuit community in Weston, Massachusetts, where he taught courses at Boston College’s Carroll School of Management and supported the Boston College Alumni Association and local priests and parishes. McInnes died in 2009 from complications of cancer and a fall.
