Scope and Contents

A collection of text messages used to make a collage spanning the date of leaving campus Kirkpatrick's senior year to the day of submission. The intent of the collage is not just to demonstrate the mundane challenges of being at home, online learning, and staying inside, but to capture "laughter and love" of those around her. Features messages from two friends, Amber Mitchell and Ashley Bodnar.

Fitzpatrick wrote, "As a Boston College senior, Father Leahy’s email on March 11th at 5:15 p.m. was devastating. Parting with friends and leaving my BC home behind in 72 hours was not how I’d imagined my departure. Now, 49 days later, I am documenting my experience of quarantine and “shelter-in-place” during this pandemic. Staying connected has become more important than ever. Talking to my friends daily is how I continue to fuel my friendships and keep my own spirit up. Therefore, I have collected text messages from some friends and myself from the day we left until today in order to formulate a collage. These text messages exemplify the challenges of being at home, online learning and staying inside, but they also capture laughter and love. With these texts, I hope to express that with bad comes good. Yes, there are countless numbers of “I miss you’s,” but there are just as many planned Zoom meetings or Facetimes. Yes, there are more COVID-19 cases and new symptoms, but there is recognition of our healthcare workers on the frontline, as well as businesses stepping up to make masks or donate money. Yes, there is frustration toward closed gyms and restaurants, but we are learning to defeat boredom together. As Boston College students, we may not be together, but we are still connected."
