Evangelicae Historiae Imagines (Illustrations of Gospel Stories) is an illustrated guide to the Gospels composed by Jerome Nadal, SJ (1507-1580), though not published until after Nadal's death. Nadal was one of the first ten members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and served as a delegate of Ignatius of Loyola in visiting Jesuit communities throughout Europe. For Evangelicae Historiae Imagines, Nadal chose and commissioned the scenes to be included and wrote notes to accompany and explain each scene. With the cooperation and support of Antwerp publishers Christophe Plantin and Martinus Nutius, 153 woodcuts were eventually produced by Bernardino Passeri, Marten de Vos, and Jerome and Anton Wierix. The book was first published in 1593, with the images arranged in chronological order according to the life of Jesus. The images were republished in 1594 and 1595 with additional text as Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia (Notes and Meditations on the Gospels), in order of the liturgical year. The books became very popular tools for teaching the Gospel stories, and were reprinted numerous times.
