The edited interview was published in the October 11, 1981 issue of the New York Times. Alman begins this recording with a mention of Raiders of the Lost Ark and his film Popeye. He then discusses the difficulties inherent in making the types of films that he wants to make. He talks about his sabbatical from filmmaking and directing the Broadway play Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. He talks about his perspective, having come from Kansas City, Missouri; the play Precious Blood that he's currently directing; and the onset of the home video and cable TV business.
