 File — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Digital files and analog materials documenting efforts to resolve The Troubles, a period of violent conflict between Protestant unionists and Roman Catholic nationalists in Northern Ireland in the late twentieth century. The bulk covers dates from 1985 until the Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998, although the implementation years and final cease-fire following it are includes as well.

Helmick worked with political prisoners in Northern Ireland. A bodhrán (an Irish frame drum) made at Maze Prison to commemorate the hunger strike of 1981 and signed by former prisoners was presented to Helmick; the bodhrán is included in the Working Papers subseries.

Earlier files relating to conflict resolution in Northern Ireland can be found in the series for Helmick's student years at Union Theological Seminary and his work with the Centre for Human Rights and Responsibilities and the Centre of Concern for Human Dignity.
