Administrative History note: Alpha Chi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau
Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) was founded in 1922 as a non-profit organization to promote the importance of world health and further academics and research, service, and leadership in nursing. Sigma has supported nurses through funding for research, education and research conferences, continuing education, and grants and awards.
The Alpha Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau was founded at the Boston College Connell School of Nursing in 1970, becoming the forty-fourth chapter. It succeeded two local honor societies, both founded in 1960: the Siena Society for undergraduate nursing majors and the Mater Spei Society for registered nurses earning their baccalaureate degrees. The primary purpose of the honor societies, continued in Alpha Chi, was to recognize excellence and mentor the next generation of nurses. The Alpha Chi chapter produced newsletters and hosted programs and events exploring topics in health and nursing and honoring those who have exemplified leadership and commitment. In particular, Alpha Chi hosted the Annual Reverend Edward J. Gorman, SJ, Lecture on Humanistic Nursing, first presented in May 1978. The chapter also supported members' research through symposiums, grants, and awards at the local, national, and international level.
