Historical note: Boston College Friends of Art

The Boston College Friends of Art was established by President J. Donald Monan, SJ in the early 1980s to provide a network for Boston College alumni and others interested in art to exchange news and information, raise funds for the expansion of the museum's collections, and highlight the museum's role as a cultural resource in the greater Boston metropolitan area.

Historical note: McMullen Museum of Art

The Boston College Museum of Art began in 1975 with the Boston College acquisition of neighboring Newton College of the Sacred Heart. At the time, Newton College of the Sacred Heart possessed both a Fine Arts Department and an Art Gallery. Boston College continued to hold art exhibitions on their new Newton campus until 1988, when an art gallery opened on the main campus in Devlin Hall.

In 1990, Nancy Nezter was named the Director of the Boston College Museum of Art. The following year, Devlin Hall was closed for renovation, including that of the art gallery. The Boston College Museum of Art reopened in October 1993. The Museum of Art was renamed the Charles S. and Isabella V. McMullen Museum of Art in May of 1996 in honor of the parents of Trustee Associate John J. McMullen. In 2016, the Museum moved to the newly-renovated 2101 Commonwealth Avenue, formerly the Archbishop of Boston's residence.

Processing Information

This collection was a single acquisition, but was later split into two collections. The other collection was called the McMullen Museum of Art records (BC.2006.010) and contained materials relating to museum exhibitions, docents, and similar Museum-related materials. In 2023, the two collections were reintegrated into this single collection. Series titles were adjusted, but folder titles remained the same. Photographs were reintegrated with the rest of the collection, either with the files they had been removed from or as their own files.
