Biographical Note: D. H. Lawrence
D.H. Lawrence was an English author best known for his modernist novels, but he also wrote short stories and poetry. Lawerence taught and published in London until 1912 when he moved to Europe with Frieda Weekley, the wife of a former professor, who he eventually married in 1914. With the exception of a few years at the start of World War II, the couple lived abroad for the rest of their lives, as Frieda's German heritage and Lawerence's controversial novels and known anti-militaristic views caused them to be viewed with suspicion in England. D.H. Lawrence's novels, including Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover were widely censored until well after his death in 1930. A landmark lawsuit against Penguin Books in England in 1960 failed to find the publisher guilty of breaking the Obscene Publications Act of 1959, changing the publication landscape for literary works containing explicit material.
