Material written and collected by twentieth-century Jesuit William M. Stinson, SJ. Included are lecture notes about Catholic poets Joyce Kilmer and John B. Tabb, as well as other literary and theological topics; a scrapbook of postcards from World War I-era Europe; and a collection of United States currency.

Biographical note

William M. Stinson, SJ, was born in Charlestown, MA on August 20, 1876, to Patrick J. and Mary A. (Donnelly) Stinson. He graduated from Boston College High School, then spent one year at Boston College before entering the Society of Jesus in 1894 and going to Frederick College, Maryland, for his novitiate. He completed additional studies in philosophy and theology at Woodstock College, Maryland, and spent his tertianship year at Tullamore College, Ireland. He was ordained a priest in 1910 and took his final vows in 1915. He taught classics at Loyola College, Baltimore (1902-1907) and St. Joseph's College, Philadelphia (1911-1913), and also served as dean of both colleges (Loyola 1919-1920, St. Joseph's 1914-1918). During World War I, Stinson served nine months of 1918 as chaplain with the 3rd Army Corps Artillery in France. He came to Boston College in 1920, where he taught classics until 1924, when he was made librarian. He was a member of the Catholic Library Association and served as its president. Stinson died on March 21, 1935 in his room at St. Mary's Hall, Boston College, after a long illness.
