One-page manuscript oath in which André-Nicolas Forgeot renounces the practice of the Chinese rites. Signed by Forgeot and co-signed by Jean-Sylvain de Neuvialle, superior of the French Jesuit China mission. With six lines in manuscript by de Neuvialle.

Biographical Note

French Jesuit. Born in Vézelay, France, Forgeot embarked for the Jesuit mission at Macau in 1746. From 1755 he was active for several years at the Jesuit mission in Hubei province, until returning to Macau where he died in 1761. Forgeot is best known as the author of a 1750 letter reporting the martyrdom of the Jesuits Tristano Francesco d'Attimis and José António Henriques in Nanjing on 12 September 1748.
