Biographical note

M. (Mary) Pollard was born in Essex, England on June 5, 1922. She was educated at Hawnes School near Bedfordshire, England, and studied for several years at medical school. A change of direction led to her employment at Southlands Teacher Training College in Surrey. There she also trained as a professional librarian, and applied her training into practice when she arrived in Dublin, Ireland in 1957 with two part time positions at Marsh's Library and the Library of Trinity College Dublin.

In 1964, Pollard was promoted full-time at Trinity College as the designated rare book librarian. In 1973, she established a hand press, the Trinity Closet Press, housed in the basement of the College Printing House. Pollard was appointed the first keeper of early printed books in 1980. She retired from the post of keeper in 1983 to focus on her research on the Dublin book trade. This research went on to be published in two books: Dublin's trade in books, 1550–1800 (1989) and A dictionary of members of the Dublin book trade, 1550–1800 (2000).

In 2001, Dublin University awarded Pollard an honorary D.Litt., and in 2002 she was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy. M. Pollard died on June 24, 2005 in Dublin, Ireland.
