Historical note

The American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS), formerly the American Committee for Irish Studies, was founded in 1960 by Lawrence McCaffrey, Gilbert Cahill, and Emmet Larkin, all of whom would go on to serve as president of the organization. ACIS was created as an interdisciplinary scholarly organization dedicated to promoting the study of Ireland and the Irish. It has approximately 800 members internationally, including the United States, Ireland, and Canada, and it holds an annual conference each spring, in addition to regional meetings in the United States throughout the year.
