Boston College collection of Lord Dunsany

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a bound manuscript and two letters all in Dunsany's hand. The manuscript contains thirty-four of Dunsany's poems and his play The Tent of the Arabs. The poems were originally written from 1917 through 1940 and largely relate to the subjects of the first and second World War. He presented the handwritten anthology to the Red Cross in 1940.

Bound manuscript of 76 pages, some of which are mutilated with loss of text. Earlier version of the catalog record gives the date of production as 1780 and identifies the scribe as Seaghan O'Domhail, however the basis for this attribution is unknown.

Scope and Contents Four edicts or proclamations relating to the Jesuits in Portugal, likely manuscript copies of printed texts. Written in four or more distinctive cursive scripts. The first text (16 pages), begins "Nós D[o]n Fran[cis]co Cardenal Saldanha, visitador e Reformador G[er]al App[ostolico] da Religiaō da Companhia de Jesu nestes Reynos de Portugal ..." and is dated at end "Junqueria à 15 de mayo de 1758". Composed of official records of the Eire Society of Boston, including meeting minutes, correspondence, programs, publications, and financial records. In addition there are clippings, scrapbooks, and some photographs which relate to the society and its activities. While most of the material dates from the period after 1937, there are some collected artifacts and ephemera from the nineteenth century pertaining to Irish and Irish-American political figures.

An eight-day devotional on the Exercitia Spiritualia of Saint Ignatius, including an introduction to the Exercises, and sermons. Richard V. De Smet posits that this may be the same text published anonymously in 1864 at Pondicherry under the title Arch Ignaciar Gnana Tiananghel. See de Smet, R. (1991). The Exercises in India: An Early Ignatian Revival. Ignis, 20(4), 191-196. The text is incised on palm leaves and bound with string in wooden boards.
